Five-spice powder recipe

Five-spice seasoning for meat and poultry in Chinese cuisine uses flavored. It's easy to make your own.

Preparation: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 10 minutes

Total time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons black pepper
  • 3 star anise
  • 2 teaspoons fennel seeds
  • Two 3-inch cinnamon sticks, broken into small pieces
  • 6 whole cloves

Preparation:

In a small, dry, heavy skillet, grilled peppers over medium heat until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Shake pan frequently to prevent burning. Remove to a bowl. Repeat separately roast with star anise, fennel seeds, cinnamon, cloves.

Pour all the roasted spices in a spice grinder (or clean coffee grinder) and grind to a fine powder. Allow to stand in the mill for 1 minute, then transfer to a glass jar and tighten the lid. Store in a cool, dark place for up to a month.

Yield: about a quarter cup
